CHILDREN OF THE MEKONG: DUMAGUETE EDUCATION CENTER
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
NGO Name: Children of the Mekong
Pillar:Access to Education for Girls and Women
Location:Philippines
Funding Period: 2020-2022
THE CHALLENGE
In the Island of Negros, most youth live in remote, impoverished areas, which creates an inability to access university education, build professional knowledge or establish professional networks necessary for career development. If children and adolescents have the right assistance, though, they can become models of skill and responsibility for their communities.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
The Dumaguete Education Center works with impoverished youth from isolated countryside areas to help them earn their university degrees, meeting their basic educational needs to facilitate their social inclusion and entry into the professional world. The Center houses students and supports them throughout their 4-year university careers with the help of a supervising team that consists of a trained overseas volunteer, a social worker and a caretaker who takes the parenting role.
